The Pillar Point Educational Fund
The Pillar Point Educational Fund is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit oraganization founded by Leland and Cecily Parsons in 2005. Their mission is to generate funds through the sale of tickets for harbor tours of Pillar Point Harbor that will be awarded as educational grants for the children of commercial fishing families. When Leland and Cecily arrived in Pillar Point Harbor, near Half Moon Bay California, they saw that many of the commercial fishing vessels were is varying states of disrepair. It was clear that the fleet was feeling the effects of difficult economic times. Leland and Cecily imagined that if the fleet was having difficulty maintaining their vessels, they would have little money available for the education of their children.
The Pillar Point Edcuational Fund's sole asset is the vessel, IRENE, which Leland, his wife and dozens of community volunteers restored from derelict condition over a five-year period. The not-for-profit generates funds by offering hour long, narrated tours of Pilar Point Harbor.
